Bhutan has enjoyed an incredibly interesting and enlightening past history since the first true historical moment when Guru Rinpoche first arrived on the scene and introduced Buddhism into the zeitgeist of Bhutan. After this original shot in the arm of Buddhism, Bhutan started developing from a fractured country, with each little piece of land run by a different king, into a country inherently steeped in it’s own amazing culture. Whether it be the civil wars, the enlightenment from different Guru’s, to finally abolishing the monarchy and installing a modern democracy, Bhutan has run the gamut when it comes to changes within its borders, let alone the changing of the official borders in 1774. The true turning point in Bhutan’s history though, was the installment of the National Assembly of Bhutan in 1953, which gave Bhutan a much more modern functioning government, and reorganized their judicial system to streamline and become more fair and efficient. This represented a true turning point in Bhutan because the infrastructure of the sovereign state only was improved and reinforced going forward, culminating in 2001 when King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck instituted a parliamentary democracy, truly bringing Bhutan into the 21st century.
